Ruth Bancroft began planting succulents and cacti on her family walnut farm in 1972, and the garden she made in Walnut Creek is now open to the public as one of the leading dry gardens in the country. Across town, the Lindsay Wildlife center has run a hospital for injured wild animals since 1970, the first of its kind in the United States.
